>>- Caroline Arnold wrote: It looks like you both have logged off. Bye-bye! I enjoyed our chat.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Rene, I meant to tell you that I like the way you were able to put the pictures on top of the chat screen showing me with the koala and my Australian Animals book.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Hooray! My screen reappeared. I had to hit the reload button.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: My screen doesn't show any more of our chat. Have a good day!

- Mrs. Goble wrote: Mr. Rene, can you see this typing?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Yes, thank you Rene for setting this up. It was good to chat with you again too.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Thank you Mr. Rene for setting up the chatroom and for being here too! We cannot wait to send our pen pal letters to your students and to receive yours and our new travel buddy!

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I don't see anything on my screen so I think perhaps our session ended. It was fun chatting with you!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We wish to thank you for this chat! It was fun and we hope we can chat with you and also hope that you are able to come visit us sometime soon!

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Allicyn, yes I do know many other authors. OOPs I think we just got disconnected.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Felicia, I write about animals because I think they are interesting. And each one is different. I like learning how each animal is adapted for its particular life.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Allicyn asks: Do you know any other authors of children's books or other books.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Felicia asks: Why do you write about animals?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Klint, I have lots of ideas for books. A book that I am working on right now is about mammals of the sea. It will be about whales, seals, walruses and other sea mammals and the special adaptations to their bodies that help them live in the ocean.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: ;-) ha ha ha...no, we want to see the mess!

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I will take a picture and send it to you. But I think I will clean up a little first so my office doesn't look too messy!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Klint wants to know: What other books do you plan to write in the future?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Dylan, I wish I could say that I found the Megalodon tooth. But I didn't. I bought it at a fossil shop. Although one good place to look for Megalodon teeth is right here in California, I haven't found any. However, I have found other kinds of fossils.

- Rene wrote: Mrs. Arnold and students and Mrs. Goble... I need to do some school paperwork alas... so I need to go now. Thanks for this nice chat ;-)... and just continue it without me... I will read the complete chat tomorrow morning... you all, have a nice day (it is already dark here, almost 10:00pm)

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We are wondering, can you email us a digital photo of your office sometime? ;-)

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I like finding out new and interesting things. That's one reason I like to write nonfiction books.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Dylan asks: How long ago did you find that Megalodon tooth?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Makala, I do my research just like you do when you want to find out something. I go to the library. I look on the internet. I visit zoos and museums and I talk to experts. I read books and newspapers. I take notes about things that I need to know for my books and I save the notes in boxes. As you can imagine, my office is full of lots of boxes!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Makala wants to know: How do you know all of the tings you write about in your books?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Ashley, that's a good question. Scientists can figure out the age of the rock that the fossil tooth was buried in. That tells them how old the tooth is.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Skye, I use various techniques for my illustrations. In my first books my illustrations were a combination of pencil and watercolor. I have just finished some baby books that I illustrated with cut paper shapes.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Ashley wants to know: How do scientists know how old the tooth is of the Megalodon?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Caila, I'm glad you liked my book about JJ. I don't have plans to write another book about saving animals right now. But you might look at some of my older books. Sea Lion, for example, is about how people help baby sea lions that are sick. And Saving The Peregrine Falcon is about people trying to help this bird from becoming extinct. The book was written in the 1980's. The good news is that the peregrine falcon has now been taken off the endangered species list.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Skye wants to know: How do you do your own illustrations? Do you paint or do you draw or what?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Rene, your fossils sound fascinating. Two million years ago was about the time the Megalodon became extinct.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Caila wants to know: I liked the book about JJ...are you going to write another book about saving another animal?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I wrote stories in school when I was your age. My mother saved a few of them. One was about a train ride my family took from Minneapolis to St. Paul. But I didn't start writing stories professionally until I was grown up. Writing is actually my second career. Before that I was an artist. Sometimes I do the illustrations for my own books.

- Rene wrote: a little older than I am (even with my gray hair ;-) ).

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Nobody knows how JJ got separated from her mother. She was only a few days old when people found her. The ocean is a big place, so I can imagine that a baby whale might get lost. Usually mothers don't give birth until they are in a safe lagoon in Mexico. JJ was born before they got there.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Stori asks: How old were you when you wrote your first story?

- rene wrote: some of them are over 2 million years old

- Rene wrote: I do not know exactly what kind ... but he has some stonen plants, shells, fish

- Caroline Arnold wrote: What kind of fossils? Do you know how old they are?

- Rene wrote: and Frank is collecting fossils from all over the world

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Breanna asks: Do you know why JJ was not with its mother?

- Rene wrote: I found a lot of fossils in the southern part of Holland, yes

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Congratulations on finding arrowheads. They are a good way to learn about some of the earliest people to live in North America. I have some arrowheads my father found near Dayton, Ohio. That is not too far from where you live, so maybe the are similar.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Mr. Rene, have you or your son ever found any fossils in The Netherlands?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I also like to visit schools because I get to meet wonderful teachers and librarians too!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We know there are fossils here in Indiana. Some of us have found arrowheads by the river. (Ohio River)

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I like to visit schools because I meet kids like you and find out what kinds of books you like to read and what kinds of projects you do in your classroom. The fun thing for me is that every school does something differrent. I get to learn how people are using my books in different ways.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Jessica, you have a good question. Nobody knows where JJ is right now. I think she is out in the ocean living like all the other whales. After she was released, people lost track of her. Sometimes people think they may have seen a whale that looks like her, but no one is sure. By now she is almost grown up.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Dylan asks: What is it like to go from place to place, school to school on school visits?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Do you ever find fossils in Indiana? I believe that people have found fossils of mammoths and other Ice Age animals in Indiana.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Jessica asks: Do you know where JJ is now?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I like learning about Megalodon and other animals in museums. Then I can see them up close and it is safe. In Los Angeles the Natural History museum has a huge Megalodon jaw. It is bigger than a person.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Felicia...says...oh, I see, yes, you are right, I would not want to meet one in real life! I might look like a seal to it!

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Yes, I hope we can arrange a visit too.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Felicia, you are right that it is maybe not good that Megalodon is extinct. But I wouldn't want to meet one in person! Would you?

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Everyone here wants you to visit us right away!!!

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Hunter, I liked that part too. Sometimes I go on whale watching trips in the ocean and see gray whales during their spring migration. They are VERY big!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Felicia says: I liked reading about how the shark got its food, how it hunted...and no, I guess I am not happy about it being extinct.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I have a fossil megalodon tooth that is bigger than my hand. I bring it with me when I do author visits at schools.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Hunter says: I liked it when JJ was released and began exploring the ocean to see new places, what her new place was like.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: What did you like best about Giant Shark? Are you glad that Megalodon is now extinct?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: What did you like best about JJ the Baby Whale?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: We don't have any fireflies in California. Fireflies don't live west of the Rocky Mountains. But I remember catching fireflies at my grandmother's house near Chicago when I was a little girl.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We read three of your books in the last week...JJ The Baby Whale, Giant Shark, and Fireflies

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I understand you will be learning about fireflies this year. Have you started studying them yet?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Thank you! It is a girl and her name is Alessandra. She lives in Rochester, NY

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Congratulations!! A boy or a girl?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: I think I have written 125 books! I have written so many I sometimes lose track! My newest book is called Birds: Nature's Magnificent Flying Machines.

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Hi Allicyn. I decided to be a writer when my children were small and I read books to them. I thought I would write books for them. Now, my children are grown up and I have a new grandchild!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Katlyn asks: How many books have you written?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: There is a little delay between the time I write and I see my words on the screen. Hello! I have just got your message.

- Rene wrote: oopss... Ms Arnold was already here ;-)

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Allicyn asks: What gave you the idea of being a writer?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Hi! I am ready to chat. It is a warm sunny day here in Los Angeles.

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Hello Ms. Arnold!

- Rene 2 Klint wrote: Hi Klint, my lunch..... just bread.... (in Holland we eat a lot of bread)

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Klint asks Mr. Rene: What did you have for lunch, Mr. Rene?

- Rene wrote: well kids... seems Ms Arnold is a little late.. do you have any questions for me?

- Caroline Arnold wrote: Hi I just logged on! How are you?

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: It is sunny now, it was raining earlier

- Rene wrote: How is the weather?... it is raining very hard here

- Rene wrote: Hello students of Cannelton

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: Is anyone here?

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We are here ready to chat!

- Mrs. Goble's class wrote: We look forward to chatting with you and Ms. Arnold Monday at 2:00 pm CStime

- Rene wrote: testing

- Rene wrote: Congratulations to CES for winning ISMF Award!
