Mrs. Goble wrote: Mr. Rene, if you are still here, thank you for setting up the chatroom!

Mrs. Goble wrote: thanks so much! We will definitely be reading them as soon as we get them!

asuen wrote: You're welcome! I'm glad they all had a chance to write!

Mrs. Goble wrote: They cannot wait to read the books I ordered. Did you get my letter about it?

asuen wrote: And now I'm off to the post office! Your books are on the way! Best!

Mrs. Goble wrote: Every one of my students who is here today was able to ask a question...I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to do this for them!

asuen wrote: So they're gone now? Well thank them for me. It was fun! :-)

MRs. Goble wrote: My students wanted me to say to you....THANKS! It was so much fun!

Mrs. Goble wrote: We totally enjoyed this chat! You are fun to chat with! (You too Mr. Rene!)

Mrs. Goble wrote: I had to get my class over to music class...sorry

Rene wrote: Nice to meet you too, thanks for joining us for the first meeting this school year. Bye everybody

asuen wrote: Yes, Elijah, I think I will always write, even if I don't sell any more books.

asuen wrote: Thanks Rene. It was nice meeting you!

asuen wrote: Yes, Layla, I like writing about animals. They have adventures too!

Elijah wrote: Will l you stay being a writer?

rene wrote: Mrs. Suen and students of Cannelton (and Mrs. Goble),,, I want to thank you all for this chat. I need to go, alas. Maybe we can plan a new chat later this year, so my students can join then too (they are working hard to learn English this year)

La yla wrote: Do you like to write about animals?

asuen wrote: Marvin, my funniest book is Hamster Chase. I'll be sending it your way this afternoon. When it arrives next week, read it and see what you think! :-)

Marvin wrote: what was your funyest book?

rene wrote: any more questions from students?

asuen wrote: Taysia, I love to write anytime! :-)

asuen wrote: Rene, they want the artist to be free from pressure from the author so the art will be his own vision, not simply what the author says.

Taysia wrote: Do you like writing in your spare time?

Mrs. Goble's class wrote: WOW!!! You could see it from your school? That is great!

Rene wrote: (it is always fun to visit Cannelton ;-))))) )

asuen wrote: Yes, Brandon I do visit lots of schools. It's fun!

rene wrote: what is the reason why publishers do not promote more collaboration between a writer and illustrator?

asuen wrote: NASA

Brandon wrote: Did you visit a lot of schools?

asuen wrote: Milt, I saw it happen when I was a kid. My dad worked at ANSA annd we lived by the Cape where they launched the rockets into space. We could see it from the front of our school. :-)

marvin wrote:

asuen wrote: William, I have only "met" them on the phone - and only because I called them. The publishers like to keep the author and the artist separate.

Milt wrote: Do you like to read the man on the moon?

asuen wrote: I had Dutch teachers in high school, but no books in Dutch yet. My Baby Born book is coming out in Japanese this fall.

William wrote: Have you ever met any of your illustrators?

Rene wrote: In Holland we speak -of course- Dutch... is there any book of you translated into Dutch // in what languages are your books translated to, besides Spanish?

Rene wrote: cannelton students... did anyone of you traveled to other places?

asuen wrote: That's wonderful! I will have to look at it!

Rene wrote: You wrote the book "Man on the moon" ... nice illustration by the way ... did you know that Cannelton students made a wonderful website about the Moon Tree ?

asuen wrote: Yes, Cody I tried for many years to be a book illustrator, but my writing was stronger than my art, so now I just write the words and let someone else do the art.

asuen wrote: Yes, Zach - I've gone to Europe and Central America. This past winter we went to Tahitii. The beach was so nice! We also have family we visit in Canada.!

Cody wrote: Did you want to be an book illustrater

asuen wrote: I like to write easy readers because I used to teach kindergarten and first grade

Zach wrote: Have you ever traveled to other places?

asuen wrote: I wrote eht Subway book while I was riding the subways on vacation in London and Paris - but the idea came to me on the subway in Washington. DC. It was a "vacation" book.

Rene wrote: Cannelton, more questions?

asuen wrote: I *LOVE* to write poetry about things that move! Cars, trucks, trains, planes!

Cody wrote: D

asuen wrote: I call it "looking at the bones of a book." Artist study anatomy so they can draw. This is "book anatomy" for writers. :-)

Rene wrote: you wrote several different kinds of books (board books, recovery books, hi-lo readers, etc.)... can you tell the kids what you like most to write about and why?

KristenTaylor wrote: What was your favrite thing you wrote?

asuen wrote: The "secret" is to read books everyday and to take them apart and see how the author put them together.

asuen wrote: 29 years is along time, but I wasn't *mailing* books all that time, I was teaching and raising kids too

rene wrote: (ok,,, but I am not that patience to wait for 29 years... how can we get a book published sooner than that.. you know now the secret)

asuen wrote: How many books! 500-600! But I haven't SOLD that many! I've only sold 68 so far...

asuen wrote: I tell this to the adults I teach too - write the kind of books YOU like to read!

asuen wrote: I write with students of all ages and what I tell them is to just write what you like.

rene wrote: I will see if we can install a spell checker in this chatroom ;-))))))))

Kaine wrote: How many books did you write?

asuen wrote: l-a-t-e-r! [oh my!]

asuen wrote: "Leter" not alter [Now you know my secret, I can't type and spell at the same time!]

Rene wrote: Cannelton students are around 8-9 years of age, mine are around 12... what advice can you give them if they want to become a writer too ?

asuen wrote: 29 years alter, when I lived in my first ever house with stairs [this house!] I l sold my first book!

asuen wrote: When I was eleven I wrote a book about a girl who lived in a house with stairs.

Rene wrote: Maybe the students of Cannelton can do something about that (not having medals on the wall ) ;-))

Michael wrote: What was your first book you wrote?

asuen wrote: My books have won awards but no medals for me to hang on the wall...

asuen wrote: No medals yet!

asuen wrote: Why do I write? Because I read, and I had things that *I* wanted to say too.

asuen wrote: I almost always write on scratch paper first. I have lots of it around. I recycle old paper and write on the back,

Rene wrote: Josh asked... why did you start writing?

Becky wrote: Have you won a medal?

asuen wrote: I write because I read. For me the two go hand in hand.

asuen wrote: I started writing books when I was eleven [ in 1967!]

asuen wrote: For the moon book I had 80 drafts, at least!

asuen wrote: I am a "re-writer." I write my poems and books over and over until it feels just right.

Rene wrote: (but, of course, answering the kids goes first ;-) )

asuen wrote: I write everyday. I walk in the morning for an hour and think things over.

Josh wrote: Why did you start writeing books?

Rene wrote: can you explain us how you work? how many hours per day writing, on paper or on computer, rewriting... how long does it take to write a book, that kind of info ;-)

asuen wrote: That's a big smile!

Mrs. Goble's class wrote: :-)))))))

asuen wrote: Yes, I like to write books. Reading books was always my favorite thing! :-)

asuen wrote: I am working on a book now about recess! That's always fun!

Quinn wrote: Is it fun to writing a books ?

asuen wrote: Yes, I enjoy writing about sports. There is lots of action!

asuen wrote: I thought it was late in Europe!

Rene wrote: Hello Suen, Hello Cannelton

Amber wrote: Do you like to write about sports?

Rene wrote: ( it is now 8:30pm in Holland, so my students are at home, alas )

asuen wrote: It's hard fo rme to have a favorite book - I love them all - for differnet reasons.

asuen wrote: Hi Rene! Welcome! :-)

asuen wrote: I am only in charge of the words. The artist does the art without talking to me.

Rene wrote: (just coming in, saying: Hi from Holland)

Elizabeth wrote: What is your favorite book?

asuen wrote: Most people think that I tell the artist what do draw, but I don't.

asuen wrote: I am the author, so I write the words. The illustrator does the illustrations.

asuen wrote: Let me answer Allison's question first.

asuen wrote: You're welcome! Thanks for inviting me!

Mrs. Goble wrote: Let's begin! Thank you for coming to our chat.

asuen wrote: Did you want to wait or shall we begin now?

asuen wrote: Thanks for having me! :-)

Mrs. Goble wrote: We were practicing...Allison has asked her question already. Welcome to our chat!

Allison wrote: Do you do your own illustrations?

Mrs. Goble wrote: Yes, we are looking forward to it! We are on central time. 1:30 is chat time!

rene wrote: yep, it works... three hours to go

asuen wrote: So we're all set! I'll see you on Wednesday!

asuen wrote: It must load the message after it refreshes. :-)

asuen wrote: No, I just press send and then it appears automatically

asuen wrote: So I write it and then press send, then I press add messages

asuen wrote: This works just fine!

asuen wrote: Testing, testing

Mrs. Goble wrote: This should work out fine. We look forward to this author chat!

rene wrote: testing room for Anastasia Suen... welcome !
