- live in New York.

[emilycostello] No, I was never a veterinarian!
[emilycostello] I live in Massachusetts.
[goble2] Do you have any pets ?
[emilycostello] Unfortunately, I don't have any pets.
[emilycostello] My husband and I are expecting a baby in June.
Goble> Congratulations!!!
[goble4] Congratulations
Goble> We wish to know, what is your favorite book you have written?
[emilycostello] When the baby is old enough to want pets, we'll get some.
[emilycostello] My favorite book is LOST KITTEN.
[emilycostello] I think it is the most exciting.
Goble> We have not read that one yet, but we will soon ;-)
[emilycostello] But I like all of ANIMAL EMERGENCY.
[emilycostello] There are ten books all together.
Goble> We like the story of Abandoned puppy, we feel it is exciting too.
[goble4] We want to know if you like your job?
[emilycostello] I love it!
[emilycostello] Writing lets me research anything that interests me.
[emilycostello] I get to play "let's pretend" -- even though I'm a grownup.
[emilycostello] I write articles for magazines, too.
Goble> Yes, so, did you ask real vets about their jobs?
[emilycostello] Yes, many real vets gave me advice for ANIMAL EMERGENCY.
[emilycostello] I also talked to lots of people who live out West -- like
- Stella and her family.
[goble3] What magazines?
[emilycostello] People who live on remote sheep farms have internet
- connections.
[emilycostello] They are happy to answer questions!
[emilycostello] I write for several Scholastic magazines.
[emilycostello] Two are Super Science and Science World.
[Mrst4th] Mrs. Goble - are we connected?
[emilycostello] I also write for Zillions.
Goble> Do you write constantly, or do you take breaks?
[emilycostello] That's a magazine you might find in the school library.
Goble> Yes, do you see this Mrs. T?
[emilycostello] I write constantly.
[goble2] We really like your books
[emilycostello] Some periods are busier than others.
[emilycostello] Thank you, Goble 2!
Goble> We can read your lines, Mrs.t4th
[emilycostello] Do any of your students like to write?
Goble> Yes!!!
[emilycostello] I get many emails from kids who are writing stories.
Goble> They are saying, Yes we do
[goble4] what's your favorite animal?
[emilycostello] That's a hard question!
[emilycostello] I like cats because they have so much personality.
[emilycostello] I like dogs because they are so friendly and loyal.
[goble4] We do to!!!
[emilycostello] I love wolves! Just the idea of them in the wild gives me
- the shivers.
[emilycostello] Horses scare me a bit. They are so big!
[emilycostello] And I don't really like rats.
[goble2] Are all of your books based on a true story ?
[emilycostello] I don't think I could have a rat as a pet.
[emilycostello] No, none of my books are based on true stories.
[emilycostello] There is true stuff in them.
[emilycostello] But the stories are made up.
Goble> Ashley wants to know, how long have you been writing?
[emilycostello] Hi Ashley!
[emilycostello] I've been writing for about seven years.
[emilycostello] I am still trying to get better.
[emilycostello] Writing is so hard. I think you could spend your whole life
- practicing.
[emilycostello] One reason I like to write is because it IS hard.
Goble> Yes, we feel the same way
[goble3] Are you working on a new book?
[emilycostello] Yes.
[emilycostello] I am working on a new series of books.
Goble> Mrs. T?? can you see our typing?
Goble> We can see yours
[emilycostello] They involve a group of kids who have to unravel riddles to
- find a treasure.
[emilycostello] I hope they will be very exciting!
[emilycostello] What other books do your students like to read?
Goble> We like Harry Potter
Goble> We like other animal books too
[emilycostello] I like Harry Potter, too!

[emilycostello] What about Charlotte's Web?
[emilycostello] That's one of my favorite animal books.
Goble> Several of the students have read Charlotte's Web
[goble3] Jaci says, she has read all 4 Harry Potter books too!!
[emilycostello] Good for you, Jaci!
[emilycostello] That last one was very thick.
Goble> Yes! Jaci won a special Harry Potter award last week for finishing
- all four books!

[emilycostello] What kinds of stories do the kids like to write?

[goble2] When is your new book going to be in stores ?
[emilycostello] ANIMAL EMERGENCY #10 will be in stores next month.
[emilycostello] It's called Lonely Lamb.
[emilycostello] Stella and Papa Pete get stuck in a snow storm!
Goble> Wow!
Goble> That sounds exciting, but scary!
[goble4] It sounds like a good book.
[emilycostello] It IS a bit scary.
Goble> We want to get all of your books
[emilycostello] But it has a happy ending. :)
[emilycostello] I hope you do!
[emilycostello] Rabbit Rescue is another popular book in the series.
[emilycostello] Lots of kids write and tell me they like it.
[emilycostello] In Rabbit Rescue, a rodeo comes to town.
[emilycostello] Stella and Josie meet the clown.
[emilycostello] And Cora competes in a barrel-riding competition.
[goble3] how do you preform surgary on a goldfish
[emilycostello] I also like BAD LUCK LION.
[emilycostello] In that one, Stella and Papa Pete track a sick mountain
- lion.

[emilycostello] Ha! The goldfish scene is one of my favorites.

[emilycostello] I lived in Italy for two years.

[emilycostello] Definitely!
Goble> Is your family from Italy (ancestors?)...do you have family there in

[emilycostello] I like to learn about how complicated the natural world is.
[emilycostello] Scientists have to work hard to save endangered animals.
[emilycostello] Sometimes the things they think will help, don't.
[emilycostello] And sometimes, animals survive even when science says they
- shouldn't.
Goble> we have just been learning about endangered and extinct animals
Goble> we feel it is important to save endangered animals...like the Indiana

[emilycostello] No, I am half Irish and half German.
[emilycostello] Bats are great!
Goble> How old were you when you first started writing? How old were you
- when you became a published author
[emilycostello] I guess I've been writing since first grade. :)

[emilycostello] It's called "My Best Friend and Me."

[emilycostello] I published my first book when I was about 26.
[emilycostello] It's called "Becky at the Barre."
[emilycostello] The story is about girls who take ballet lessons together.
Goble> Is it in bookstores?
[emilycostello] Probably not anymore.
Goble> We hope you keep writing animal books.
Goble> We like them, you do a good job with them.
[emilycostello] The public library is a better bet.
